Overview

Jatropha curcas is a drought-tolerant shrub whose seeds hold 30–40% inedible oil, avoiding competition with food. The oil can be converted to biodiesel, and because the whole plant is toxic it often serves as a living fence.

Semi-evergreen shrub up to 6 m, extremely drought-tolerant, grows on poor dry soils.

Pale yellow-green flowers in cymes; monoecious, insect-pollinated.

Capsules

Three-lobed capsule ripening from green to yellow-brown, one seed per lobe.

Oil-rich seeds

Black seeds with 25–40% oil for biodiesel; contain toxic phorbol esters.
