Overview
Strawberry is a low perennial herb 10–30 cm tall that spreads by runners into new plantlets; its leaves grow in threes with toothed, softly hairy leaflets. The five-petalled flowers are white with yellow centres. The 'fruit' is a swollen red fleshy receptacle (2–5 cm across) studded with many tiny true fruits (achenes); it tastes distinctly sweet-tart and aromatic.
Strawberry is a hybrid of European and American species (18th century) grown widely in temperate and tropical highland regions; in Vietnam it is mainly grown in Đà Lạt (Lâm Đồng), Mộc Châu (Sơn La) and Sa Pa. The fruit is eaten fresh and made into smoothies, ice cream, jam and pastries, and is rich in vitamin C; strawberries reproduce mainly asexually by runners.
